In the Last Days

You have probably heard about this particular "sign" that we are approaching "the end times," from Paul's epistle to Timothy:
But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power.
Problem: Paul's next sentence to Timothy is:
Avoid such people.

Paul cannot possibly be talking about the days at the end of history.

Or in other words, when things become difficult certain people will not exactly rise to the occasion. Avoid them, because they will not help you to do what it right, they will drag you into their party of pity and sin.
